LIFE Engineering Philosophy
"Reality is the source of truth. Everything else is a model."
Core Principles
1. Evidence Before Opinion
No decision is made without supporting evidence. No claim is accepted without verifiable data. The platform exists to make reality visible, not to confirm preconceptions.
2. Protect the Runtime
The Runtime is the foundation. It must remain stable, predictable, and backward-compatible. Domains come and go; the Runtime endures.
3. Everything is Observable
If it happens, it must be measurable. If it is measurable, it must be logged. If it is logged, it must be queryable. No invisible operations.
4. Everything is Explainable
Every decision, every risk score, every state transition must be explainable. Black boxes are not acceptable in production.
5. Reality is the Source of Truth
The physical world is the ultimate authority. All data, models, and predictions are approximations. The platform exists to reduce the gap between model and reality.
6. AI Assists. Evidence Decides.
AI models may suggest, predict, or classify. They do not decide. The Runtime evaluates evidence and makes deterministic decisions based on rules.
7. Every Decision is Reproducible
Given the same inputs, the system must produce the same outputs. Non-determinism is a bug.
8. Every Object Has a History
Nothing exists without context. Every object carries its full lifecycle: creation, changes, observations, risks, events, and resolutions.
9. Every Observation Has Provenance
An observation without source, timestamp, and method is not evidence. It is noise.
10. Runtime First. Domains Second.
The Runtime serves all domains equally. No domain may introduce special cases into the core. Domains extend; they do not modify.
Engineering Values
- Stability over speed. A slow correct answer is better than a fast wrong one.
- Clarity over cleverness. Code is read more often than it is written.
- Observability over optimization. You cannot optimize what you cannot see.
- Simplicity over features. Fewer moving parts means fewer failure modes.
- Explicit over implicit. Magic is acceptable only when fully documented.
Decision Framework
When in doubt, ask:
- Does this protect the Runtime?
- Does this improve observability?
- Does this make the system more explainable?
- Does this respect the boundary between Runtime and domains?
- Would this decision still make sense if we had 100 domains?
If the answer to any question is "no", reconsider.
Invariants
These rules never change:
- No observation without timestamp.
- No observation without source.
- No state transition without logging.
- No API change without versioning.
- No domain logic in the Runtime.
- No Runtime dependency on any domain.
- No manual intervention without audit trail.
- No data deletion without justification.
